Safe Haven of Iowa County

Mikko's former family reported that he is exceptionally territorial and doesn't like people approaching his house or yard.  He has nipped children in the neighborhood; therefore, Mikko came to Safe Haven and we are looking for a forever home for him with no children.  We are also looking for an adoptive family or person that doesn't have a lot of different people coming and going. Mikko is wonderful at the shelter with the majority of our volunteers; but he will take his time getting to know any new people and probably not warm up to them immediately.   Once he knows you and trusts you, he is a big cuddle-bug.  But, there are a few volunteers he has just decided he doesn't care for, no matter how many times he has met them. 

He understands the basic commands of sit, stay, get, come, leave it.  He was kennel trained but hasn't used the kennel for months.   He comes running when he is called.

He liked to cuddle and play with the older dominant female dog in the family, but hasn't been socialized with other dogs.  So we have not been able to find any playmates at Safe Haven, but living at the shelter is a pretty "intense" environment.  Perhaps in a more relaxed home environment Mikko will be able to find another dog he gets along with. 

He loves to cuddle with the family, to be outside, to go on walks, to play frisbee, and to play with stuffed animals.
