Safe Haven of Iowa County

Binky, now Charlee, was adopted as an approximately 6 month old puppy from our shelter in March 2013. Charlee was recently returned to our shelter as her adoptive family found she was just too shy to ever feel that comfortable around small children, and they were concerned she couldn't really be happy with them. Charlee is sweet as pie and non-aggressive, but very scared and shy with anyone that she does not know. When people would come to her home, she would bark at them and try to hide from them. She has done well with other dogs that she is used to. She is crate trained and still working on housetraining. Potty training Charlee will be much easier for a person who has a fenced in yard that Charlee can become comfortable in. If she were to be taken out on walks on leash to go potty, she may initially be fearful of her surroundings and have a hard time relaxing to go potty.
Charlee originally came to our shelter from a situation where there were many dogs not getting the care or attention they needed. This is part of the reason why Charlee is shy, but it also seems to be just part of her own little personality as other adoptees (even some of Charlee's siblings) from the same situation are not as shy as she is. Charlee will need a special person/persons to adopt her that are able to help her build her confidence, and yet be comfortable with Charlee just as she is.
We envision that Charlee might be most comfortable with an older person or couple that has the time to dote on her so she can dote on them right back:).
