In order for us to accept a dog or cat for rehoming we need to know a few basics about him/her. No one question is a deal breaker, but rather honesty helps us to make an educated decision on how Safe Haven can help. After we receive answers to all of the questions on the relinquishment form our board will vote as to whether or not we can take him/her. A decision as to whether we can take the animal (or perhaps help in some other way) should not take more than 36 to 48 hours after all the requested information is provided including a picture of the animal.

Factors that contribute to priority are: 

• If it is a local animal
• If we have a past relationship with you (volunteer, supporter, adopter, etc)
• If we think the animal is highly adoptable and feel it will not occupy space for an extended period
• If there are unusual factors about the circumstance or animal that are particularly compelling for us

Factors that contribute to us declining your request: 

• If it is a senior animal that we believe would have difficulty adjusting to a shelter and/or new home and would be unhappy. 
• If it is not well socialized 
• If there are unusual otherwise undefined characteristics that would contribute to a long wait for adoption

In all cases, when we accept animals for admittance, it will be based on whether we have space. We operate at capacity most all the time and often utilize a waitlist for intakes.
