Rascal is selective about warming to people immediately making him a good choice for a watch dog to warn you if there are strangers in the area.   Once he sees that his people are comfortable with visitors, he generally is as well.   However, it takes him a little longer to show friendliness with some people, especially men.  He does let strangers know with a growl and bark that he is on duty.  
He was relinquished by a family who cared very much for him, but because Rascal had nipped a neighbor's child, without breaking skin, the neighbor had asked the family to rehome him.   In just a few days at the shelter he has won the hearts of numerous volunteers and shows his sweet side to those he recognizes.  
He is a beautiful dog and has only the one occurence of unpleasantness with a child (which was not witnessed by an adult)   He has always played well with his own family's youngsters.
