Description:
Greta was born on a farm and had very little interaction with people. Her mother was a small white wire haired terrier mix, and her father was the purebred Doberman down the road. As you can see, she seems to have inherited her father's looks. Because she'd had little socialization, the farmer was not able to capture her when he moved, so he chose to leave her behind.  The family that moved to the property helped trap Greta and brought her to us.  Greta is very shy around people but will now take treats from volunteers. She does not seem aggressive, just extremely scared, and we do not push her. Our volunteers sit in her kennel with her and hand feed her and sometimes read to her when time allows. She seems to appreciate the interaction. We also allow her to roam the halls when there is downtime. She places herself back into the safety of her kennel when approached.

Since Greta is taking a while longer than expected for us to be able to touch her and leash her up, we placed a large plastic crate in her kennel and she loves to lie in the crate, it surely is her safe zone.  On December 18th we were able to take Greta to the vet by closing her in this crate.  She wasn't too excited about being in the crate at first, but she rode quietly in the car, and was super brave.  Greta was spayed that day, as well as vaccinated and microchipped.  During surgery the vet did discover that she had an old injury or trauma to her right hip, which is dislocated.  Several of our volunteers had noticed that at times Great does walk with a limp, so this wasn't actaully too much of a surprise. Unfortunately, they were unable to manipulate the leg to get it back into place.  The vet recommeded that eventually Greta will need to have an x-ray done and see the extent of this trauma, but for now we are still working at gaining Greta's trust and building a positive relationship with her.

Greta is available for adoption to a person who has experience with a dog needing socialization. We need to help Greta learn to be more comfortable with people, including to walk on a leash.

If Greta tugs at your heartstrings and you would like to visit her, please call to set up a time.
