Description:

Shep was adopted from Safe Haven by a senior citizen in February, 2011, and has been a wonderful companion to her.  In that short period of time he has shown lots of love and a desire be protective.  Because she plans to move to an assisted living arrangement in the near future, she is going to have to let Shep find a new family to love and protect.  Shep is still living with her as we search for that family.  Prior to moving to a home situation we thought Shep did not want to ever share attention or space with another dog because that was his shelter behavior.  However, he has found a buddy that belongs to a family member.  Even though the other dog is very mellow too, Shep allows him to be the alpha dog.  He will run and play with his buddy when they are off leash.  Shep walksk on-leash perfectly, and also walks well with his buddy, and he especially likes to share the back seat of a car for a ride.  So, he is not opposed to sharing with all dogs.

He has a charming habit of saying hello by howling very briefly.  We have learned that in Shep-talk that means he is happy and thinks he is about to get extra attention or go for a ride or walk.  He will come over to a seated family member and try to lay the upper part of his body on his/her lap to get and give a little love.  Rides in the car are sure to be rewarded with a little doggie kiss on the ear for the driver.

His protective tendency has resulted in a few snaps at individuals he must have felt he did not know well enough.  He has never snapped at a family member.  He has the herding instinct and will try to convince his cat housemates that they should move from location A to location B.   He  understands 'no' when that gets to be too much for the cats and is interfering with their naps.
