Meet Mackenzie (pictured first) & Abby Rose (pictured second) - our newest bonded pair at Safe Haven! They came to us as their previous owner needed to move to a care center and could not take them with. Abby Rose & Mackenzie have lived together most all of their lives, so they have become very bonded to one another and dependent upon one another. Although a huge transition took place in their lives coming from a home which they lived in for many years and moving into the shelter environment - these girls have learned to LOVE all of the attention, warm laps to sit on, stroller rides around the shelter and outside (on the warmer days!), and have settled in quite well.
Upon their arrival at Safe Haven, they were both brought up-to-date on their veterinary work by our veterinarian. An examination took place as they both had not been seen by a vet for a few years due to their owner's declining health. A senior blood work panel was taken from both girls to determine their state of health. We were pleased to have their blood panels results check out well - for their age. Abby Rose has a grade 4 heart murmur, she has been started on medication for this. The medication is relatively inexpensive and it helps her heart from overworking itself. She has been doing well with this medication. It was brought to our attention that Abby Rose was not spayed upon her arrival - after receiving several medical professionals opinions on this procedure for Abby Rose, it was decided to proceed with the needed spay surgery. We are very forunate this surgery took place as Abby Rose had the beginning of pyometra (infection of the uterus), which can sometimes be fatal if left untreated. Abby Rose has recovered well after her surgery day (she also had some dental cleaning done), and is loving her time spent snuggled up with her life-long companion 'sister'. Mackenzie had been spayed a few years ago due to the same condition (pyometra), so we are happy to say both girls won't have to worry about that ever again! It is noticeable in the pictures that Mackenzie is blind. She has been blind for a few years now, and gets around well with her nose and with the help of her guiding partner, Abby Rose. Not being able to see does not slow this little gal down - she does quite well finding her way around and adjusting to change, with time. Abby Rose & Mackenzie were not used to going outside for walks nor potty time. Their previous owner left potty pads out for them to use - we have done the same with them while they've been at Safe Haven, and both girls do relatively well with utilizing the pee pads. They do enjoy getting fresh air and snuffling around in the grass, but their tendency has been to utilize pee pads as that is what they have been used to most of their lives. Any future adopter(s) should expect to keep potty pads out for their use to help with comfortability and familiarity. With that being said, considering they are both senior-aged pups, their future adopter(s) should be able and ready to take on any further medical cases that may arise with these girls. They do request a warm bed to cuddle up in - maybe a warm lap too?! :) A quiet home where their "person/people" are around often would be great for these two as they transition back into a home setting - they truly enjoy every bit of human interaction and company they can get. If you are interested in meeting Abby Rose & Mackenzie, please complete an online adoption application found on our website at www.wesavepets.com. Once the online application has been completed, a Safe Haven volunteer will be in contact to discuss the next steps. Other Pictures of Mackenzie (Bonded w/ Abby Rose) (click to see larger version):
