8/5/24 Update: Zach's adopters made the very difficult decision to return him with hopes of finding him an experienced, well suited home. His owner's saw several signs of resouce guarding behaviors while he was in his home. While trying their best to avoid any high value triggers for Zach, they knew it was in everyone's best interest to find Zach a home where these triggers were less appearant and before any further biting incidents took place. Zach is a very lovable fella, so we know the perfect home is out there for him! He did live with two other smaller dogs while in this home - but we feel Zach would do best in a home as an only-pet so there is no need for Zach to compete for attention, toys, etc. to avoid any further triggers in the home setting. Any interested party should also consider other high value items like treats, toys, etc. while taking his resource guarding behaviors into consideration. Zach is looking for a home with no small children, as sudden or unpredictable movements seem to overwhelm him. We have taken suggestions from a trainer into consideration while getting to know Zach and his triggers. Zach has been responding very well to several training techniques and has won over our hearts here at Safe Haven! These training techniques have allowed our volunteers & staff to build closer bonds with Zach and his loving personality. We are always happy to share what we have been working with Zach on to potential adopters - we feel this information is very important, and always recommend continuing the techniques even in a home setting. We believe an exerperienced dog owner(s) will do well with Zach as he is a very smart, loveable boy who is always seeking affection from his trusted people. Zach has shown signs of allergies (scratching at ears, biting at his feet, etc.) for several years, so is continuing to receive a daily medication for his allergies ("Apoquel"). This fella loves to be outdoors and is a very easygoing walker, enjoying every step of his walks! Zach has underwent many life changes over the last several months of his life and is quite confused about his reappearance with us in the shelter setting. He is ready to find his new forever home, one to call his own and where he can live out the rest of his golden years! Contact us to set up a time to meet Zach today! www.wesavepets.com

Please read below for more information on Zach & his initial stay with us at Safe Haven:

Zach is a very loveable guy who recently came to us as an owner surrender. He has been loved and adored by his previous owner since he was a puppy. With his owner's declining health, the family knew Zach deserved a home where he can continue to live out his wonderful doggie years ahead in a new home. Zach is just shy of eight years old and has been loved and wonderfully cared for so he is looking for a new home that can continue to spoil him.

His previous family believes Zach would do best in a home where he wouldn't need to be kenneled and had a routine for his daily needs. This routine and patience will be important to help him get back on track with house-training.  They report that Zach is good about going to the bathroom when taken outside, but doesn't alert you when he needs to go, so he was having accidents in his home as his family said there had not been a very good bathroom routine maintained.  Zach also does require a daily allergy medication. He has had a history of itchiness - but the medication has seemed to help Zach with this as he's received the medication for several years. He appears to be a very happy-go-lucky boy and we've learned quickly that he is very easy going.

Zach is all up-to-date on his veterinary care. He is current on vaccinations, had been previously microchipped, has been receiving heartworm and flea/tick preventatives... AND he has also had a fresh groom! He is looking quite handsome!

If you're looking for a great companion, consider adopting Zach! Please complete an online adoption application as the first step of the adoption process. The application can be found on our website at www.wesavepets.com. Once the adoption application has been submitted, a Safe Haven volunteer will be in contact to discuss the next step of the adoption process.
