Video of Diva:**UPDATE/ 3/8/2020** Diva was adopted several months ago, and lived happily in a fantastic home, which included a loving teenager and even a small canine brother. While Diva had shown some resource guarding tendencies, she loved playing with the small dog in her new home. However, after several months, Diva did eventually grow weary of sharing her home and did injure the other dog during an incident which required medical attention. Therefore, her family did return Diva, which was very sad for everyone - but we will now be looking for a home for Diva where she can be the only dog and not have to share her home. October 2019 - Diva did not feel well when she first came to us, and, and her previous owner could not provide the medical care she was needing. Diva was quite overweight, and had double ear infections along with several infected patches of skin all over her body. The ear infection was so severe that she carried her head sideways all the time and sometimes lost her balance. One of the contacts who had known Diva previously theorized her condition was due to allergies to chicken, so we put her on a Salmon based Sensitive Skin and Stomach kibble. But Diva would hardly move or eat, and nothing seemed to interest her at all - she acted as if she did not care if she lived or died. She was pretty unresponsive to all of our attempts to get to know her. She sat down every few steps if we tried to walk her, exhausted and often off-balance. She had weekly vet appointments with multiple different medication therapies to try and get her back on track. What a wonderful day it was when the blood results gave the veterinarian some possible answers, and Diva was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and started on daily medication. Each day has brought a new change in Diva's attitude and personality! She has quickly become a favorite with volunteers enjoying the 'new Diva' every chance they get. Diva is feeling much better, eating well, her fur has started to grow back in a little bit, and she has lost over 15 pounds and is moving great now - in fact she loves her walks and will often jog a bit too! Diva has continued to battle through issues with her ears, and while they have made huge improvements, we do hope her ears will continue to improve yet. Her new family will need to be committed to ongoing "ear health and maintenance" which will likely include medicated ear rinses twice a week, and could involve extended vet care. Diva has responded very well to her thyroid medication, and her 6 week bloodwork (thyroid levels) drawn in October showed her thyroid levels are stable and her daily medication is working! So currently Diva seems to be enjoying life and is in good health. We recently received the results of her Allergy testing (using a blood sample) that were quite surprising actually - it indicates that she is likely allergic to beef, beet pulp, kangaroo, flaxseed, beef liver and venison - and actually not to chicken. That is good news since so much dog food has chicken as an ingredient, but for now we will continue to feed her the same special food since she is doing so well on it. We have seen some resource guarding tendencies, including growling when she is protecting something she wants. So it is likely that she would do best as an only pup in her new home. Diva is also very uneasy and scared of young kiddos, but does well around teen-aged kids. Interested in adopting this pet?
