Rudy came to Safe Haven after PAWS & More Animal Shelter in Washington Iowa reached out to other local animal shelters because they were helping to remove 14 dogs from a home where the dogs were needing help. Safe Haven took in Rudy and his buddy "Taffy".
Because we know the situation Rudy and Taffy came from we know that 'dad' was a full blooded weimaraner and 'mom' was one of several possible pit mixes. His eye color must be from his 'dads' side of the family. Rudy's appearance shows the possible pit mother in his ancestry but it is so misleading if you are expecting him to be assertive or aggressive in any way. Rudy is our go-to dog when we need to test other dogs to see how they react to a new dog in their life. He is very loving and a great young dog that seeks human attention....or when placed in a play-pack situation he is the first to do a little play move to invite other dogs to play. Rudy also loves a great belly rub --- just like Taffy!
The vet estimates Rudy to be a little more than one year old, so he has years and years left to bond with a family and be a great companion. Rudy recently convinced a young human male who was afraid of dogs that he need not be. We have not seen him with small children to see how he reacts. However, he does find cats to be pretty intimidating and has to be coaxed to share a room with them when he initially meets them.
